Anime leaker claims Heavenly Delusion season 2 is already in early development

Has Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou) been renewed for season 2, what will the plot be, and what date might it potentially release?

The 2023 Spring anime broadcasting slate is coming to an end and whilst the season may have been dominated by the likes of Demon Slayer and Oshi No Ko, arguably the most interesting new series was Heavenly Delusion, aka Tengoku Daimakyou.

The season 1 finale is set to premiere this weekend on Hulu and Disney, bringing an end to the first saga in Kiruko and Maru’s adventure in a haunting post-apocalyptic Japan: now, fans are curious about the future of this series.

Here is everything that fans need to know about Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou) TV season 2 including its renewal status and why it might be several years before we see the anime return to our screens.

Heavenly Delusion season 2 renewal status

As previously noted, Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou)has not yet been publicly renewed for season 2 by Production I.G.; however, all of the signs are there that the anime will return for a second broadcast – it just might be several years away from releasing.

In fact, there are already rumors circulating from well-known anime news leakers that a second season is being planned by the showrunners. Twitter leaker ‘oecuf0’ recently teased “TV ANIME “Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion / A Journey beyond Heaven) 天国大魔境” will have a Season 2!”

Whilst fans should always take anime leaks with a heavy pinch of salt, this page has historically been relatively accurate when it comes to news announcements.

What we do know for certain is that modern anime renewals typically depend on two main factors: the success of the franchise as a whole and the availability of source material from an original light novel or manga series.

Thankfully, the Heavenly Delusion anime has experienced a positive reception both domestically in Japan and with international fans worldwide. Ahead of the season finale, the series is scoring a solid 8.21/10 on MyAnimeList, 8.2/10 on IMDB, 77% on Amilist, and 4.1/5 on Anime Planet.

Additionally, the original manga series from Masakazu Ishiguro is still releasing new content, having begun publication in January 2018. The Heavenly Delusion episode 13 season 1 finale is expected to adapt up until around chapter 37 of the original manga series, which was the final chapter of Volume 6 – released in Japan back in July 2021.

The good news is that the original manga is still ongoing with 55 chapters across nine complete Tankobon volumes having been published in Japan, meaning that there should eventually be enough source material for a second season of the Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyo) anime adaptation.

Overall, it should only be a matter of time before a second season is announced, but what will the plot of the next adventure be?

Whilst the Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou)anime has not been strictly keeping to the order of events shown in the manga and even without a formal season 2 announcement, we can tease the plot for the second season.

The translated synopsis for Heavenly Delusion volume 7, from which the second season of the anime is expected to pick up, reads:

“Maru and Kiruko travel through a future Japan that has become a “magical land” in search of a “heaven” that they do not know where it is. The two follow the “Kiru ray symbol,” which they believe is the key to finding “Heaven,” to the “Highland Academy” Nara facility. However, as they wander through the forest, they are blocked by a “strange figure” ……. Meanwhile, the “Highland School” in “Heaven” is attacked by someone, and the children are “protected” by the attackers. The children were leading a new life, but the plan of the “headmaster” was revealed and ……! At last, “Heaven” and “Magic World” are connected in this ensemble drama of boy and girl survivors!”

Heavenly Delusion season 2 potential release date

The problem with predicting a potential release date for Heavenly Delusion season 2 is that there is likely not yet enough source material to produce a second season straight away.

As previously explained, the season 1 finale is expected to adapt up until the conclusion of Volume 6; however, only nine volumes have been published in Japan at the time of writing. In all likelihood, Production I.G. would need at least another two manga volumes’ worth of content to produce season 2 of the anime series.

Unfortunately, the Heavenly Delusion manga has been traditionally releasing only two manga volumes per year, typically with six chapters each. This means that there will not be enough available content for season 2 until at least Summer 2024.

Assuming that Production I.G. would maintain a similar production cycle to season 1, fans might not see the Heavenly Delusion anime return for season 2 until either late 2024, or more realistically, 2025.

Importantly, this was also included in the aforementioned ‘leak’ concerning the renewal status with Twitter page ‘oecuf0’ adding “It won’t be out for a while.”

This article will be updated as soon as more information on Heavenly Delusion season 2 is revealed
