Summary

  • Sydney Sweeney transitions from rom-com superstar to a potential horror movie icon in the chilling film Immaculate, a stark departure from her previous roles.
  • Immaculate, directed by Michael Mohan, showcases Sweeney's acting prowess as she portrays a nun experiencing terrifying encounters in a remote convent.
  • With the potential to establish Sweeney as a scream queen, Immaculate could catapult her into a highly demanded career in the horror genre.

Sydney Sweeney's new Immaculate movie couldn't be more different than her popular romantic comedy, Anyone but You. Sweeney turned up the heat with co-star Glen Powell in a marketing ploy that got audiences in a desperate state of anticipation for the 2023 love story film. Their electrifying chemistry didn't just attract droves of eager viewers to theaters but translated deliciously on screen, forging Anyone but You into a highly lucrative and quintessential rom-com.

Sweeney's Bea and Powell's Ben fronted the will-they-won't-they romance as former flames who run into each other at a wedding and pretend to be a couple to stave off prying loved ones. As an almost instantaneous hit, Anyone But You broke several box office records and left fans hungering for a sequel or, at least, another romance movie starring Sweeney and Powell. The actress has become a bonafide rom-com star, so much so that anyone would expect that she would capitalize on the opportunity, but instead, Sweeney has taken an unexpected venture into a wholly different genre.

Anyone but You is now available to purchase digitally on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV.

Immaculate Brings Sydney Sweeney To Horror After Anyone But You's Romantic Comedy

In a complete about-face following the success of Anyone but YouSweeney will take the lead for the psychological horror film Immaculate. Under the direction of Michael Mohan, who she has worked with previously on the thriller movie The Voyeurs, Sweeney will play a nun of devout faith named Cecilia who gets pregnant by what the trailer suggests had been immaculate conception. Supporting her among others in Immaculate's cast of characters will be The White Lotus actress Simona Tabasco, Italian actress Benedetta Porcaroli, and Money Heist lead actor Álvaro Morte.

From the looks of the Immaculate trailer, the upcoming film's combination of religion and pregnancy horror could be intriguing and frightening enough to be Sweeney's next major movie hit, mere months after Anyone but You's explosive theater run. Sweeney's Cecilia appears to experience strange encounters and unspeakable horrors in a remote convent while preparing for the immaculate birth of a child that may not be of the earth. Immaculate's eerie tone and religiously threaded storyline is a stark step away from Anyone but You's breezy, comedic romance, but Sweeney just may have taken a step in the right direction.

Immaculate Can Make Sydney Sweeney A New Horror Movie Icon

Given Mohan's recent praise of the actress, Sweeney's role in Immaculate could be one of her best to date. In an interview with Total Film, Mohan spoke highly of Sweeney's unhinged performance in Immaculate, as it demonstrated her breadth of talent and "fully establish[ed] her in the pantheon of scream queens." For Mohan to rank Sweeney within one of horror's most popular tropes, which would include elite members like Halloween's Jamie Lee Curtis, The Exorcist's Linda Blair, and other genre-defining scream queens, means that Sweeney has a great chance at becoming a new horror movie icon.

Mohan's raving compliments of the actress indicate that Immaculate will display the full force of her acting prowess.

Sweeney already has a track record of becoming iconized, not just as a rom-com superstar for her performance in Anyone but You but as a Hollywood luminary for her unforgettable performances in popular series like EuphoriaThe White Lotus, and The Handmaid's Tale. Mohan's raving compliments of the actress indicate that Immaculate will display the full force of her acting prowess. If Sweeney can pull it off and garner the reception that so many of her projects have established before, her Immaculate performance could open up a long and highly demanded career in the horror genre.
