In a thrilling encounter at the Millerntor-Stadion, St Pauli Hamburg claimed their first home win of the Bundesliga season with a commanding 3-1 triumph over fellow newcomers Holstein Kiel. The match saw the hosts deliver an impressive performance against the debutants, showcasing their potential to shine in the top flight of German football.
It was Manolis Saliakas who opened the scoring for St Pauli in the 25th minute, marking a significant moment as he netted the side's inaugural home goal of the campaign. Saliakas executed a spectacular first-time strike from the edge of the area, leaving the Kiel defense stunned.
Holstein Kiel had a glorious opportunity to equalize just before the halftime break when Lewis Holtby was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area. However, Fiete Arp's resulting penalty was brilliantly saved by St Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, maintaining their advantage.
The hosts extended their lead shortly after the interval, as Morgan Guilavogui capitalized on a swift counterattack in the 56th minute. With the game drawing to a close, Johannes Eggestein sealed the victory for St Pauli with a well-timed goal in the 85th minute, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Despite Phil Harres pulling one back for Kiel during stoppage time, the goal came too late to spark a comeback, leaving the visitors disappointed.
