A Powerful 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Colombia


On the morning of August 10, 2026, at 7:34 a.m. local time, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia. The epicenter was near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, at an intermediate depth of roughly 96–110 km according to the Colombian Geological Service and the U.S. Geological Survey.



The quake, caused by rupture within the subducting Nazca plate, was the strongest to hit Colombia in a decade. It was widely felt across much of the country—including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Pereira, and Manizales—and registered in neighboring nations. A magnitude ~5.0 aftershock followed shortly afterward. No tsunami threat was issued.


Heavy structural damage occurred in cities of the Coffee Axis and Pacific region. In Manizales, one tower of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary collapsed into the nave, multiple buildings partially or fully failed, and homes were destroyed. Similar collapses and trapping of residents were reported in Pereira, Cali, and Quibdó. Airports in the affected zone suspended operations.
